William Harvey Brown collection #215, ca 1908, Southern Africa: Shona & Ndebele, 71 artifacts

William Harvey Brown graduated from the University of Kansas School of Engineering and became involved with Cecil Rhodes in the colonial conquest of Southern Rhodesia (today's Zimbabwe). He was a member of the Pioneer expeditionary forces that defeated the Ndebele army and established the mining and agricultural economy of Rhodesia. He served as a mayor of Salisbury.

This includes: milk containers, cups, spoons, neckrests, animal tail whisks, dance leg rattles, snuff bags & bottles, stools, knives, sheathes, axes, knobkerries, swords, powder horns, and other tools of warfare. (See Robert H. Brown Jr. collection below including some of his grandfather William's personal and household effects.)
