Prof. Richard Mshomba
Department of Economics
La Salle University

Richard E. Mshomba is Professor of Economics at La Salle University in Philadelphia, U.S.A. Born and raised in Arusha, Tanzania, he received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His areas of research are development economics and international economics, with a focus on African countries.  Mshomba is the author of Africa in the Global Economy (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2000), a Choice Outstanding Academic Book, and Africa and the World Trade Organization (Cambridge University Press, 2009). He is a frequent guest analyst on Voice of America on economic issues pertaining to Africa. He has also been a guest analyst on National Public Radio (U.S.A.), Radio Netherlands, Irish Public Radio and a number of other radio stations. He is a frequent contributor of op-ed pieces to The Arusha Times.
Mshomba was awarded the Pew Faculty Fellowship in International Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, 1993-94. He received the 2005 Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and the 2009 Distinguished LaSallian Educator Award, both from La Salle University.  Mshomba travels regularly to his village of Sinon, Arusha, where he and his wife, Elaine, are engaged in educational and development initiatives.

Prof. Mwangi wa Githinji

Mwangi wa Gĩthĩnji earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside.  His primary interests are in the areas of Development Economics, Political Economy and Environmental Economics with particular attention to Africa.  He is most interested in issues of class, gender and income distribution in relation to transition. Mwangi is the author of Ten Millionaires and Ten Million Beggars (Ashgate Press 2000) which examines issues of income distribution, class, and gender in Kenya, and the co-author (with Robert Pollin and James Heintz) of An Employment Targeted Economic Program for Kenya (Edward Elgar 2008). In addition he has published book chapters and journal articles on economic development in Africa.  He has consulted widely for UN agencies on economic issues in specific African countries and the region as a whole.  Mwangi was chair of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of Economics at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, before moving to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2006 where he is an Assistant Professor of Economics.

 

 

 

Prof. Kwabena Gyimah-Brempong

Prof. Kwabena Gyimah-Brempong was born, raised and graduated from college in Ghana, West Africa.  After one year of National Service, Dr.Gyimah-Bremong  came to Graduate School in the US and got a doctorate degree in 1981 from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. He has been teaching in various US universities since then. Besides teaching he works as a consultant for African Development Bank, Tunis, TUNISIA; United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s project on “Defense Budgeting Processes in Africa” Project, New Partnership for Africa’s Development. (APRM), and African Capacity Building Foundation. His research focuses on African development issues, economic models of crime and crime prevention, and efficiency in the production of public goods.  He has published about 70 refereed journal articles. He is also the recipient (twice), of the USF Presidential Excellence Award for research as well as COBA research award at Wright State University.
