September 28 and 29, 2007
Migration and movement have been central to African societies and cultural achievements since their beginnings. At the dawn of the 21 st century, African goods, ideas, and people continue to move around the continent and the world. The Mid-American Alliance for African Studies has chosen to explore the causes and consequences of movement in its 2007 meeting in Lawrence , Kansas . From the spread of ideas and cultural practices among different regions of Africa to the arrival of African immigrants in the Midwest , the promise for creative research remains endless. Scholars and practitioners from all disciplines are invited to share their ideas and projects related to movement and migration in a small and friendly collegial setting. Possible themes include the following, although other topics are welcomed:
- Roots and results of African migrations
- The African Diaspora: interactions with Africa
- Africa and changes in transportation
- Gendered migration and movement
- Education migration and movement
- Economic migration and movement
- Ethnicity and migration in African history
- Artistic culture, migration, and movement
- African social and political movements
- Religious movements and migration
The deadline for submission of abstracts is June 15, 2007
