Faculty Professional Development Travel Grants
Kansas African Studies Center

The Kansas African Studies Center, thanks to funding from the US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant, is once again able to offer a limited number of domestic and international professional development travel grants. This email sets for the policies and procedures for applying for these moneys; please take note of several key factors (in all capital letters below) that will govern our distribution of travel awards in this grant cycle, particularly for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Domestic Awards
1. For 2010-11, KASC has 6 awards of $400 each to give for faculty and professional staff.
2. We invite applications for 3 of these awards for Fall semester on a rolling basis, beginning 27 SEP 2010.
3. We invite applications for the other three for use in Spring semester, with a deadline of 01 DEC 2010 for applications.
4. THE AWARD AMOUNT IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO $400. If this is not sufficient for your entire trip, it will be necessary to find supplemental sources for your travel.
5. The application process is simple: Please send the request by email to Garth Myers (gmyers@ku.edu), what the $400 will be used for (typically, KASC domestic travel grants are for conference attendance and paper presentation), the dates, and any other information you feel is relevant, such as your involvement with KASC.
6. Additionally, KASC has instituted a new policy that all recipients of domestic and/or international travel grants must agree to some form of service on behalf of KASC. PLEASE SPECIFY WHAT YOU PROPOSE FOR YOUR SERVICE - this can take many forms, from a brownbag or seminar presentation to assistance in conference organization, to some imaginative way that you may think of to further participate with KASC in advancing African studies. The key point is that, while KASC is here to serve you, we are also a small staff who need your help, and we want to see that our investments pay off in community building for African studies.

International Awards
1. For 2010-11, KASC has 3 awards of $2300 each to give to faculty and professional staff for research or professional development travel to Africa.
2. Our intention is to offer these awards for Summer travel, and we therefore set a deadline for reciept of applications of March 1; earlier applications and earlier (non-Summer) awards may be considered under circumstances that we ask you to detail for us; we have simply found that Summer travel awards have a more productive payoff research-wise for KASC and thus give preference to this in the award process.
3. THE AWARD AMOUNT IS STRICTLY LIMITED TO $2300. If this is not sufficient for your entire trip, as I suspect it will not be, it will be necessary to find supplemental sources for your travel.
4. The application process is not as simple as the domestic awards. Since this is Federal money, we must abide by the guidelines of the government. The US Department of Education International Education Program Services office must approve the itinerary and project of the proposed travel in advance, assuring compliance with the FlyAmerica Act and the mission of the KASC NRC. Please send your CV, a paragraph explaining your project of professional development in Africa and how it serves the mission of KASC, and a tentative itinerary (including flight numbers, airlines, connecting flights, dates of travel, cost, and other soources of funding) to Garth Myers (gmyers@ku.edu).  We will process the Travel Authorization Request with IEPS and inform you when it is approved (or, if it is not, what needs to be done to revise it). This usually takes a week, and all TARs must be submitted well in advance of travel (more than 30 days).
5. As with the domestic awards, KASC has instituted a policy through which we seek to develop a formal link between the international travel money and service to KASC. PLEASE SPECIFY WHAT YOU PROPOSE TO DO FOR SERVICE TO KASC. In addition, please use your application to discuss past, present, and future service to KASC so that we can assess the applications in light of the very small number of awards available and the likelihood of competition in securing the award.

Faculty with any questions on either the domestic or international grants should please email Garth Myers (gmyers@ku.edu) or call 864-3858.

Fellows cannot be native speakers of the language for which they apply. Other African languages may be available on a tutorial basis, but special permission must be requested, and the four core languages are given priority. Ph.D. candidates who have completed their coursework may substitute dissertation research conducted in the designated African language for actual language study under specific circumstances. Travel abroad is limited to Ph.D. candidates performing dissertation research with advanced-level language proficiency in the designated language, and special approval must be requested for fellows going abroad.
