Academic Programs in African Studies at the University of Kansas

Undergraduate offerings in African Studies at KU are made up of several programs. Courses on Africa that carry the "NW" designation fulfill the Non-Western Culture requirement. (Check the KU Online Timetable of Classes listing to find out what offerings qualify.) Modern African languages taught at KU -- Arabic, Hausa, Swahili, or Wolof -- may be taken to meet the foreign language requirement in the College. Please see our information about African language courses for more information.

The following formal African Studies programs are available at the University of Kansas.

  • The 18 credit hour African Studies Minor, administered by the KASC and the AAAS Department. A designated faculty adviser is available to coordinate study in each of the following thematic areas: "Advanced African Language Study," "African Societies & Civilizations," "African Arts & Literature," "Political Economy of Health & Development in Africa," "People & Space in Africa," and a "Student Designed Cluster." Please contact KASC or AAAS for more information.

  • Graduate Certificate in African Studies - enables graduate students to formally claim expertise in an area of the field of African Studies, through completion of 12 hours of graduate coursework.

  • The 30 hour major in the Department of African & African American Studies, which allows the student to take either the African Studies, African-American Studies, combination African and African American Studies, or Haitian Studies track. Please see the AAAS website for more detailed information.

  • The International Studies Co-Major for students in professional schools may be fulfilled with Africa courses.

  • International Business options include the International Business Concentration (PDF link) and the Dean's Certificate in International Business. Both of these programs may be fulfilled with African studies-related courses.
