| This
head piece was purchased in Bissok, Gabon, in 1964-65 by Siemers while
in the Peace Corps. The previous owner, an elderly official, said the
headpiece was about fifty years old at that time. |

Nlo
nge or nlo bekege, the three faced headpiece of the fang people of Gabon
is danced in the midst of a crowd, in its faces facing faces on all sides. |
Although
its triple personae may represent the spirit world, they come to life
in the midst of a sea of humans. |
The
nlo nge is a fitting metaphor for the profile of African studies ar the
University of Kansas with its diverse interests, disciplines, resources
and multiple audiences within a single community. |
